The Georgian Ambassador to Tonga His Excellency George Dolidze today called on the Acting Speaker Lord Tu’ilakepa.
During their meeting, H.E pledges his country’s commitment to strengthen the friendly relationship between Georgia and Tonga.
 
The Kingdom of Tonga and the Republic of Georgia established their diplomatic ties in February 2015.It was to develop and strengthen friendship and cooperation between the two countries in political, economic, social, military and other fields.
 
Georgia had proposed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) by the Georgian Chamber of Commerce and Industries (GCCI) for the purpose of exploring new opportunities and communication in economic and industrial fields between Georgia and Tonga.
 
The proposal had since been conveyed, with the legal advice by the Office of the Attorney General and the official request by the Government of Georgia, to the relevant Ministry for consideration (The Foreign Ministry is following up on the status of the proposed MOU with the Ministry of Trade and Economic Development).
 
Lord Speaker and the Clerk attended the IPU 5th Global Summit of the Open Government Partnership which was hosted by the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament and was held in Tbilisi, Georgia in July 2018. During the meeting Clerk Gloriua Pole'o conveyed the Speaker's appreciation for the warm reception received while visiting Georgia last year.
 
There are a few Tongans playing rugby in Georgia and according to His Excellency, there is a possibility his country will look at collaborating with Tonga in this area.
