“Climate Change and the Environment is everyone’s business and there’s hope to see proper support that the Ministry of Environment and our communities need,” according to Chair of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Climate Change and Environment.
The Legislative Assembly of Tonga was one of four Parliaments from the Pacific to participate in a week-long ‘Pacific Parliaments Climate Change Study Visit’, from May 27th – 31st in Sydney and Canberra, Australia. Lord Fakafanua (Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga) and Semisi Sika MP (Chairman of the Parliament of Tonga’s Standing Committee on Climate Change and the Environment) represented Tonga at the Study Visit. Other Parliaments in attendance included local MPs from the Parliaments of Kiribati, Marshall Islands and Samoa.
The Parliament of Tonga’s Standing Committee on Climate Change and the Environment have been at the forefront of supporting Environment Week this week which is organized by the Ministry of Environment. The Chairman (Semisi Sika) took part in a church service at the Centenary Church on Sunday that highlighted the week’s theme:
Think, Act, Save our Environment.
