To protect member’s life, prevent further injuries and promote recovery is the aim of a two day first aid training for staff of the Legislative Assembly’s office.
More than 10 staff of the Parliament’s office are participating in the program that commenced yesterday August 13th, 2012.
Coordinator of the program, Katokakala Latavao says the initiative to run the workshop was organised when the office contacted the Chairperson of the Tonga Red Cross Society, Hon. ‘Alaileula Tuku’aho.
Participants are trained on various emergency action principles including CPR chest compressions, choking, nose bleeding, poisoning, cramps, burns, fit and seizure.
The trainees are also equipped with necessary skills and knowledge on DRS ABC emergency situation.
“For them to act according to danger, respond and send for airways, breathing and circulation in times of emergency,” said Katokakala Latavao.
She noted that the Legislative Assembly has no first aid kit supplied in the House, office and vehicles as well and emphasized the need for one to be provided in these respective areas.
Katokakala Latavao also pointed out they expected staff to be well trained and well equipped on how to provide first aid. However it is a different case.
“Participants really showed interest as most of them had no idea what to do in emergency situations. They have responded well to the training and we taught them the general rule how to respond or how to treat a victim.
We also taught them the general rule not to move a victim in times of danger, according to Katokakala Latavao.
Other first aid instructors who also facilitated the training are Sïlongo Fāsïeiki and Sione Lïhau of the Tonga Red Cross Society.
Participants will be awarded with a First Aid Certificate to act as first aider valid for two years.
The Legislative Assembly’s Office funds the two day training.
