TECHNOLOGY has become a vital element in the Legislative Assembly of Tonga’s effort in generating awareness and streaming parliamentary proceedings and information in a global context. This endeavor is now realized with the kind assistance of the British High Commission’s office in Fiji.
In liaison with the UNDP Multi-country office, the British High Commission will be purchasing a high capacity server and related equipment to increase the Legislative Assembly of Tonga’s website capacity to upload audio, video and text and at the same time be able to cater for the large amount of traffic that the website is anticipated to attract.
“Her Majesty’s Government greatly values its long lasting and close friendship with the people and government of Tonga. It is our hope that this project will help to both strengthening that friendship and to allow all Tongans greater access to their parliamentary proceedings.” British High Commission.
It is estimated that more than double the Tongan population live abroad and the website is intended to keep them well informed of parliamentary proceedings. This is particularly important noting that a significant contribution of remittances to Tonga’s GDP. The website provides the daily Hansard, Agendas, parliamentary reports, news and summary in English and
Tongan plus video and audio parliamentary footages. The website also provides educational materials for students and staff.
The total cost for the server is around T$18,000 pa’anga. INFOTECH TONGA an internet company will be responsible for the installation and servicing the server.
