King George Tupou VI

THE Honourable Prime Minister Lord Tu’ivakano this morning officially announced on Radio Tonga the passing of his Majesty King George Tupou V at Hong Kong yesterday.

In his nationwide address early this morning, Lord Tu’ivakano informed the nation that King George V’s has passed away at St Mary hospital in Hong Kong.

“At 3pm local time, 18 March 2012, his Majesty died at St Mary hospital, Hong Kong, during an official duty in the country.

Crown Prince His Royal Highness Prince Tupouto’a Lavaka was with his Majesty when he passed away,” the PM announced.

The Hon. PM also asked the nation for prayers of comfort for the Royal Family and all Tongans for the dark moment enveloping the kingdom.

King George Tupou V ascended the throne in September 2006 after the death of his late father King Taufa’ahau Tupou IV.

He died at the age of 63, six years later after leading the nation.

The cause of his death was not announced but he successfully underwent a kidney surgery last year.

Radio Tonga news reports the time of his state funeral is yet to be confirmed.
