Parliament Speaker joins Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference

SPEAKER of the Legislative Assembly, Lord Lasike is representing Tonga at the 57th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Conference in London.

The 2011 event begins tomorrow July 21 to July 29.

This is an annual forum where over 600 Parliamentarians and parliamentary staff from 175 parliament and legislatures exchange views on global political issues and developments in the parliamentary system.

According to UK Parliament website, the conference will highlight the role of the CPA as the voice of parliamentary democracy throughout the Commonwealth including Tonga, whilst enabling parliamentarians to discuss the shape of the Commonwealth over the next century.

Clerk of the House, Sione Tekiteki is also accompanying the Parliament Speaker.

Tekiteki and Lord Lasike left for London last evening.

Meanwhile, the parliamentary visit team to the Niuas, led by the Honourable Minister of Training, Youth and Sports, Fe’ao Vakata left for the two northern most islands this morning.

The purpose of the trip is to meet locals there and talk about matters and issues affecting their daily lives.

They will hold meetings with the islanders in Niuatoputapu today before continuing on to Niuafo’ou and return to Nuku’alofa next Friday.

Meanwhile Tonga’s Legislative Assembly reconvenes on Monday, July 25th.
