A one day workshop on Finance and Public Accounts matters for members of the Legislative Assembly gets underway in Nuku’alofa today.
It aims at assisting MPs to better understand their role and to commence inquiring into the reports of Auditor General as soon as possible.
Facilitator of the training, Professor Peter Loney from Australia says the training will assist parliamentarians on their work.
“It is to clarify to MPs the roles and responsibilities of Standing Committees on finance and public accounts and identify good practice that will aid them in their work.
From there, they can generate further discussion with different parties involved and to develop guidelines for their work,” said Professor Loney.
He added the training was specifically designed for the local Parliament and they ensure relevant interested parties from Treasury Department and the Audit Department are involved for the local effectiveness.
The follow up workshop is funded by the Australian government Aus Aid program.
