“His Majesty in good health” Acting PM says

HIS Majesty King George Tupou V is in good health, according to the Deputy Prime Minister, Samiu Vaipulu.

Speaking in his capacity as the Acting PM, Hon. Vaipulu informed the Legislative Assembly about the King’s health condition when the House met this morning.

“As of yesterday, reports say the king is well after undergoing some medical attention in Los Angeles,” said the Deputy PM.

Meanwhile a statement from the Palace Office says “his Majesty had successfully undergone a surgery last Thursday at a leading Medical Clinic in Los Angeles.”

“His Majesty has made a good recovery following the surgery and is to be discharged from hospital today. It is expected that a further two weeks of recuperation will be necessary before his Majesty will able to return to Tonga,” according to a statement from the Palace Office.

Hon. Vaipulu also informed the House today that while the king is out of the country, Crown Prince, Tupouto’a Lavaka will be here in Tonga next week to act as Prince Regent.

The Prince Regent will then appoint an interim Attorney General and a Lord Chancellor in efforts to comply with the requirement of the law.

According to Hon. Vaipulu, only the King has the prerogative to appoint a Lord Chancellor and Attorney General.
